Sonnyjim x Giallo Point - No Vi$able Means of Income

I was pretty excited to get a note through on this one, I've been a huge fan of Sonny's DIY approach since appreciating his aesthetic in Brum in the early noughties where witnessing his freestyle and performance skills blew my mind. From excited to completely gassed, this album is a banger.

Sonny's are always incredibly creative and imaginative; and his real life in which he clearly makes major, although admittedly smoke screened, moves makes this artistic work in particular incredibly compelling. Sit and try sifting fact from fiction through all these tracks - and if you are struggling to make your mind up look closely at this incredible album cover, especially if you know anything about Coutts. In the vein of Planet Asia the wordplay, super-smooth samples, laid-back flow and casual humour makes this release a true Hip Hop classic.

Quotables abound "Bread maker, man aint wearing no Ted Baker,  Im Making moves like a chess player,  my door swinging like Will & Jada my connect come from Venezuela, he's carrying around the pump like a Ventolin inhaler"...."I know about food and  stages of vegetation, my girl knows about Yoga and Meditation" SONNYJIM - Belgravia

Sonny Jim, Blahz Martell, Copywrite

Bigging up your home town is one of my favourite parts of hiphop music and Blahz Martell smashes this alongside grammy nominated Camille Carolina.

Brum based emcee legend returns with a very generous serving of Granola with his latest installments, available from Eatgood

Now here's a selection of bar related goodness I've been put onto recently....First Flabbz is going in HARD on Charlie Sloth's 'Fire in the Streets' sessions; followed up by Chester P's contribution....I'm posting it straight up then watching as I already know its gonna be well worth it ha.....then a couple more slabs of heavy weight lyracism firstly with Copywrite putting a great twist on slang with 'Yasin Bey' and then Tre Isaacs vibing out on hyper medula venting operation....

New Solocypher, Jeff Spec, and Submit plus Classic Eat Good Hip Hop!

New Solocypher on production from DJ Nifty.....I recently hooked up with LeeN (NLT) to finally make a start on some proper productions and this is the result; was a very good feeling to get a recording done professionally so see what you reckon. Solocypher - What The Fuss by Solocypher Jeff Spec has produced a pretty immense sounding album 'Specnology'; I'm just listening through it bobbing my head to some wonderful horns at the moment so havent had a chance to form a full view of the album as a whole; but its going to be a pleasure checking it out! Jeff says of the project "Over the past 10 months, I've been working on a record that I truly believe is my best yet (I know that's the standard thing to say, but I won't release a record unless I feel it tops my last). The album, called "Specnology", is up on Bandcamp now for preview/purchase. Go check it here. Eat Good have been doing some outstanding work with many of the dopest heads in UK; I believe there is a Sonny Jim/Foreign Beggars collab in the not too distance future. In the meantime I've gone back to 2009 to re-check this dope posse cut 'Planet Rasco' ; in particular check out the rediculous verse from my boy Truth, always reppin the East!!
Submit - Victory Lap....pretty excellent track; haven't heard much stuff doper stuff than this recently! Soon to have his Mixtape dropping, this track is a thank you to fans after winning a hypetrak.com competition; Get involved...... SUBMiT-Victory Lap by Bombay Knox

Onyx, Sonny Jima and Soul Kahn goodness

Sonny Jim - The Psychonaut EP
The Birmingham spitter ramps up his output in anticipation of the Psychonaught LP (apparently only available in Australia) to present a selection of tracks he recorded whilst travelling down under. I'm a big fan of Sonny's highly complex and humour stuffed verses but for me enjoy his style best when he's in reflective mode, and Lotek's remix of his 'Mission Statement' at the end of this EP is my favourite joint. Its a good showcase for the other spitters from various corners of the globe; but go get it quick as I think it's only available till the end of the month....Get it Now

Hip hop accross the pond is still lurking around if you care to dive into the grimy underground. Vocalswords favourite Soul Khan recently shot a video (at last) for my personal favourite 'Soul Like Kahn' tune from his free to download album. I think a few people have used this sort of edit before but love the way it's done here.

Meanwhile at the grimier end of the spectrum its good to hear of Onyx making a bit of a comeback with their 'Classic Terror'....if your gonna do thug music, do that shit properly!

Meanwhile Sonnyjim has been busy (when is he not?) working alongside the P.L.O to spit on a heavy guitar led track. The press release said it had Mudmowth on the track also, but I must have developed myopia; answers on a postcard to solocypher@gmail.com if you spot him please. The track has also been remixed Stateside with Has-Lo, Zilla Rocca and Curly Castro rocking the Mic in the style of the classic Smooth Da Hustla and Trigga Da Gambla's 'Broken Language' joint. The link to the remix is below Sonny's Joint, but I thought what the hell lets revisit the original as well...Enjoy!

Now Check the American Language Remix Here!

But dies it hold up to this!?

Jon Phonics 'Half Past Calm 2'

YNR Productions is proud to present the release of producer Jon Phonics' 'Half Past Calm 2' LP. It is a heavy project all over, my personal favourites are 'Dark Days' and 'Mind over matter'...the former has Jam Baxter and Fliptrix giving you some top notch braggadocio bars and the latter elevating yor mind into some next dimensions with Verb T and Kashmere knocking it out the park on another ill collaboration. 9 Planets and Kosyne also come particularly hard/clever on their respective tracks, loving Kos's way of switching up perspectives, great writing!

The following is taken from the press release but does a pretty good job at giving a flavour of the project...

"Jon is back with another snapshot of what the UK scene has to offer to the world of Hip Hop. Featuring highly acclaimed artists such as Jehst, Triple Darkness, Micall Parknsun, Sonnyjim, Kosyne, Obba Supa and more. This album is more than rapping over beats, Half Past Calm 2 is a statement of the current musical climate in the UK.

The album takes the listener on a journey from the coldest sword swiging boom bap on album opener 'Raw Ingredients' (Featuring Jehst & Cyrus Malachi) to the oscillating basslines and 8 bit blips of head nodder 'Pump', to the dusty soul of T-Bear & Yasine on 'Changes'. Too new school to be UK Hip Hop too Hip Hop to be, for want of a better word, wonky...

You can stream the album from Jon's bandcamp here. Where it is also available for free download for a limited time only.
Here!

The album is also available in the form of 300 x limited edition 4 ply covers available exclusively via the YNR shop here. Get yours!

Sonny Jim - The Purple Patch

Easy now the Eat Good fam have kicked off the year with a tasty treat, SonnyJim doing what he does best, "Taking it back to when MCs just used to rhyme, spazzin out with the bars, fuck a hook straight up smack u in the face hip hop how it used to be before our emcees started rhymin over that house music shit" hells yeah, ya boy Jim definitely delivers over this heavy Kelakovski beat, the first installment of a four part series. Nice

Truth 'Procrastinat(k)ing' Free EP

Get the Truth now For Free Right Here The 'Procrastinat(k)ing is probably one of the hardest EP titles to spell but well worth it. A sparkling Roc-a-Fella worthy intro music allows Truth to introduce the listener to his skills in no uncertain terms that makes you pin your ears back ready for some quality. Flipping up flows with panache and delivering the sort of punchlines that you only get halfway into the next bar, this is straight up quality hip hop. 'Numbers' extends abilities with the best numerical track since 10 Crack commandments. 'Officer' is an unusually well balanced critique of tunnel visioned 5 oh, cleverly analysing the link with anti terror legislation and draconian enforcement, seargeants should pay attention to this track unless they want to be mistaken for 'cuntsables'. Heavyweight rhymers Sonnyjim, Conflix, Grimlok and Kosyne help out with more standardly dope bars over all round great production from a variety of beatmakers to round out the E.P, however the real gem for me was 'Take Time' produced incredibly by Sivey. This is well worth a good few listens to really get into the life of times of the young Reginald. Great artwork to from Kimbo!

Eat Good Records

It's about bloody time I stuck a post up about these fellas, reppin' Brum/West Mids I had the privilege of sharing a few stages and ciphers with these boys and its heavy to see them smacking the shit out of lyricists and beatmakers all over the shop. Check the cypher for a little taste (Taharka smacks it) then jump into the stupidly big online world of Eat Good Records.

Classic Material

If you think the state of hip hop is fairly poor at the moment, you could try digging around as there is some very dope stuff about, its just hard to find. I picked up Truth and Jimmy Green's "Rapsploitation Sessions" excellent mix cd the other day and trust me its been in constant rotation, a great example of high calibre UK spitters. There's loads of great stuff from Sonnyjim, Kosyne and Kashmere circulating so watch out for that. Broadsheet's favourite poster boy Roots Manuva is supposedly on usual top form with a new LP so keep ya head up and ya ears open.

If that's not going to sate your appetite, I recommend heading to your local library and searching out "Classic Material - A guide to Hip Hop Albums" edited by Oliver Wang. It's a great guide to some timeless albums that will either have you pulling out dusty favourites or scrambling around amazon to find that dope shit to get your love of hip hop reinvigorated! Go cop dat.
